Love to Bicycle? Be Sure to Take Good Care of Your Feet

Whether you commute to work by bicycle, take a spin around the block with the family or go all out on the road with interval training, bicycling is a great way to get exercise and enjoy the scenery of our beautiful region.

To prevent injury and stay fit for biking, Palm Beach Orthopaedic Institute urges you to take particularly good care of your feet.

Foot pain for cyclists can take 2 forms:

Hot spot or friction injuries. Sweating feet that swell while riding and have force applied to them for a period of time cause friction injuries to the soft tissue such as a blister. Biking footwear that fits well along with wicking socks and non-slip footbeds help to prevent these problems. A cycling footbed is a cushioned insole that fits inside your biking shoes to cushion the feet from pedal cleats and stop friction from excessive movement of your foot within the shoe.

Compressive injuries. Sharp pain and numbness can occur from wearing footwear that does not fit well, especially across the ball of the foot. This scenario can squeeze or compress the nerves within the foot.

Both types of foot pain can be resolved with the proper equipment selection including well-fitting shoes with appropriate footbeds, a bike that is a good fit for the rider and effective personal hygiene to keep feet healthy and dry.

Choosing the Right Cycling Footbed for Your Feet and Riding Style

Take a look at the footbed, or insole, in the bottom of your biking shoes. Take it out and give it a twist - you may discover that it's a flimsy liner with little support or structure. This can be a problem when biking.

Remember that because you're cycling, you don't really need a footbed that absorbs shock like a runner needs. Your foot should be more rigid to transfer power to the pedal. Any shifting movement of your foot not only wastes power but increases your risk of injury. You want as little unnecessary movement as possible.

Studies have shown that custom-fitted orthotics for cyclists can dramatically reduce the injury rate. We all bike differently and our feet are our own - the right footbed or orthotic that works for you will be unique to your individual posture, foot structure and riding needs.

Basically, for serious bikers, your cycling shoe can be neutral as long as your footbed or orthotic is specifically made for you. Please come see us for a foot exam and custom fitting of the right orthotic for all your biking activities.
